About the Author
Claire Burkhard has been a lacemaker for nearly thirty years. She was a founder member of the Federation of Swiss Lacemakers and had travelled throughout Europe in the course of her research. She has published widely in lace journals and her first book, a selection of sixteenth-century Swiss patterns, appeared in 1986. She now lives in Switzerland.

fresh and inspiring

This book contains designs I had not witnessed before. Definitely inspiring and occasionally unusual. If you are tired of the mundane lace patterns then this book is for you. It has traditional appearing projects as well as contemporary pieces. I found it a wonderful addition to my references.

Straddling 1947

The British experience in India is a subject that has been given thorough literary treatment during the past century, and most of these books have tried to highlight some aspect of the cultural contrast between east and west. E.M. Forster's "A Passage to India" is perhaps the most comprehensive of these, but Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's "Heat and Dust" makes an admirable effort to contribute to the Forsterian legacy by updating the milieu to a post-independence setting while keeping one foot firmly in the past.

The novel concerns a young English woman, the narrator, who arrives in Bombay intending to make it her home for a while and to reconstruct the story of the doomed marriage of her grandfather, a law officer named Douglas Rivers, and his first wife, Olivia, from a collection of intriguing letters that Olivia had written to her sister Marcia. From the beginning Jhabvala splits the novel into two parallel narratives, alternating between the Riverses in 1923 and the narrator in India fifty years later, who presents her adventures, thoughts, and reflections in the form of a journal.

Olivia Rivers is a bored housewife who has little to do besides playing the piano and chatting with the other British officers' wives until she becomes enamored with the charming Indian prince, called the Nawab, who governs the district Douglas serves. A living emblem of amoral corruption and aristocratic gluttony, the Nawab dwells in an ancestral palace that arrogantly overlooks the wretched slums of the neighboring town and supports an entourage of servants and sycophantic companions including an effeminate Englishman named Harry. Jhabvala employs these elements to shape a dramatic arc that leads from extramarital attraction to adultery and finally to Olivia's disgrace following an ugly scandal for which she could never be forgiven back in England.

The narrator's analogous existence within the pages gives the novel an even broader context; she too falls in love with an Indian man, although a much humbler one, a meek clerk named Inder Lal. She also observes that India is a magnet for Europeans in search of a certain spirituality that they have failed to find in Western religions; in particular she meets a young Englishman who has become a Hindu ascetic, calling himself Chid, but who cannot handle the hardships of a land of such disease and poverty. The novel's title refers to the general climate of the region of which the narrator writes, a scorching exacerbation of the hopeless squalor in which the vast majority of the population lives.

I am aware that Jhabvala has written screenplays based on classic novels, including Forster's, for the Merchant-Ivory film team, and I confess that I somewhat expected "Heat and Dust" to be a pastiche of Forster, but I was pleased to find that Jhabvala, although like Forster a lucid and elegant prose stylist, has a distinctive literary voice, specifically in her shrewd eye for the particularities of Indian culture. From the suttee stones, morbid monuments to Hindu widows who have immolated themselves in their husbands' funeral pyres, to the British cemeteries memorializing the soldiers fallen in the 1857 mutinies, "Heat and Dust" is a valuable tour through 1920s and 1970s India.

A Powerful, Beautifully Written Novel Of Two Women & India

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's powerful and beautifully written novel of an "outrageous" Anglo-Indian romance in 1920s Khatm and Satipur won the Booker Prize in 1983. The author has crafted parallel tales of two young women, distantly related and separated by two generations. Anne, the story's narrator, travels to India to discover more about the mystery surrounding her grandfather's first wife, Olivia.
Douglas Rivers, an upper echelon English civil servant, married and brought his adored wife, Olivia, with him to India in 1923, during the British Raj. She was a beautiful, spoiled and spirited young woman, who found it difficult to adjust to life in the British colonial community of Satipur. Feeling suffocated by the inbred group she was forced to socialize with, Olivia longed for independence, intellectual stimulation and a more passionate life. She hoped that a baby would solve her problems but found it more difficult to become pregnant than she had thought. Shortly after their arrivel in India, Douglas, Olivia and some of the more important members of the community were invited to the palace of the Nawab of Khatm and she was immediately intrigued by the handsome, charismatic prince. He courted her friendship aggressively and then the friendship turned passionate. When faced with a crisis Olivia was forced to make life altering decisions which would have far reaching effects and cause scandal throughout British India and England that would last for generations.
Anne stays in the town where her grandfather and Olivia lived fifty years before. Trying to piece together the puzzle that was Olivia and discover what motivated her to change her life so drastically, Anne visits the places her "step-grandmother" frequented and interviews people who knew her or knew of her. She also reads the letters and journals that Olivia wrote so long ago, and oddly enough, Anne ventures into experiences similar to Olivia's adventures, but more acceptable in our modern time. Anne's spiritual and sensual journey in the 1970s parallels Olivia's as the color, heat, exotic landscapes, and people of India penetrate her western upbringing. Anne writes in her own diary: "Fortunately, during my first few months here, I kept a journal, so I have some record of my early impressions. If I were to try and recollect them now, I might not be able to do so. They are no longer the same because I myself am no longer the same. India always changes people, and I have been no exception."
This short and delicately written novel packs a powerful punch and paints an extraordinary portrait of British colonials in India, with their sense of cultural and moral superiority over the local population. However, even more compelling and unusual, is the story of two women, generations apart, who follow similar paths under the spell of India.

Evocative

Jhabvala's book, Heat and Dust, is set India, in two eras - the 1920's and the 1970's. The two time periods are brought together through the narrator. She has journeyed to India to research the life of her grandfather's first wife, Olivia, who left him to marry an Indian prince. The narrator chronicles her own Indian adventures while telling the reader what she has learned of Olivia. The device of using the journal is very well done, and allows the reader to see how the lives of these two women intersect in very profound ways.
The descriptions of India throughout the book in both eras were amazing and very evocative, both of the individual eras and of the landscape.
While technically very well written, I did not find the book fully enjoyable. I did not feel as though the characters of either of the two women were fully fleshed out, and I found this distracting throughout the book. Many of the minor characters were even less well developed, and this made them seem like little more than stereotypes.
While not the best book I have read recently, it is short and a quick read, and worth the time.

A Must Own For Those That Play Either Side Of The 6.Bg5 Najdorf!

This has got to be by far the best book written on the Bg5 Variation of the Najdorf in years! Sure, many repertoire books recommend 6.Bg5 for White and give White their lines. Others have some variation for Black recommended against 6.Bg5, whether that be the Poisoned Pawn like the book by New In Chess that came out a couple of years ago recommends, or even some dubious line like 7...Nc6 for Black in the Easy Guide to the Najdorf, but this book covers all the major critical lines of today, and covers them objectively! Therefore, rather than getting some narrow recommendation path for White or Black, you get everything that's important, whether that be the highly popular Poisoned Pawn or Classical Variation, more rare lines like the Polugaevsky, or the more recent discoveries in the Black Diamond (6...Nbd7 instead of 6...e6) or Delayed Poisoned Pawn (throwing in 7...h6 8.Bh4 before playing 8...Qb6).

Unlike most other advanced level opening books, this one is not just a rehash of today's databases. He adds his own analysis. For example, in the Black Diamond after the trendy 7.f4 Qc7 8.Qf3 b5 9.O-O-O Bb7 10.Bd3 g6, the line 11.Nd5 Nxd5 12.exd5 Bg7 13.Rhe1 (Also covers 13.Nc6!?) Nf6, he points out that this appears 3 times in the database and Black won all 3 with White playing 14.f5 (line c1), 14.Be4 (line c2), and 14.Qe2 (line c3). Most other authors would stop here and conclude that White should stick with 13.Nc6. This guy goes a step further with line c4, the untried 14.Nc6, which leads to a forced sequence of moves where Black has 2 choices on move 16, both looking pretty natural to someone that doesn't know the theory at a 2600 level. As it turns out, one of them loses miserably for Black after a series of tactics that work for White. The second leads to a roughly equal game, which is a lot better than what happened the other 3 games (at least for White that is).

If you play the Najdorf as Black (Which I do) or the 6.Bg5 Variation against the Najdorf as White (Which I do), this is a must have book. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone that is a beginner to chess or new to the Najdorf Sicilian as the theory in this book is extraordinarily dense (take away the index and legal stuff, counting the Forward thru the last game covered, and you have 380 pages covering 40 games plus 1 more in the introduction, if that illustrates a whole new meaning to dense), but for seasoned players that play either side of the 6.Bg5 Najdorf, this is a must own book!

I haven't had a chance to finish this book yet but I am very happy with what I've read so far. I love the chess developments series and this is as good as my favorite one about the Sicilian dragon Yugoslav attack. This book only covers the 6. Bg5 variation but this is the newest and least known of the lines and the most complex for the black player. I would recommend to any Najdorf player

In Chapter 6, Lie groups and Lie algebras are dealt with. The exponential map, the classical groups, and geodesics in the context of a bi-invariant metric are discussed. The de Rham cohomology of compact Lie groups and the Peter--Weyl Theorem are treated. In Chapter 7, material concerning homogeneous spaces and symmetric spaces is presented. Book II concludes in Chapter 8 where the relationship between simplicial cohomology, singular cohomology, sheaf cohomology, and de Rham cohomology is established.

We have given some different proofs than those that are classically given and there is some new material in these volumes. For example, the treatment of the total curvature and length of curves given by a single ODE is new as is the discussion of the total Gaussian curvature of a surface defined by a pair of ODEs.

Wonderful book - great for an advanced undergraduate or for a first year student who wants to study differential geometry. Also a great reference for a researcher in the field. I especially like the pictures of the mathematicians who proved the relevant theorems - makes mathematics have a human face.

For beginners

This book is for new traders, not for anyone having already looked at any forex or TA materials before. It is very basic. However, the book is well written, and free of mistakes or false hopes. Therefore it is good for a completely new trader.
I was disappointed because the book does not deliver the front cover message: Real and actionable techniques for profiting from ... Only the last strategy (the news) is detailed and really actionable as is, though it is very basic and well-known. It does not give much details or new things in the other chapters.
I was disappointed by the sentiment strategy. It is just not a strategy! Well, I was not expecting a strategy based on sentiment, but something really clear to establish a sentiment. The content of this chapter is very limited (extreme COT reading and news, action divergence).
The trend riding is just: find a trend line or R/S and put a limit or market order when the price is close enough, put a stop at 20 pips, exit with R/S based on your time frame and use your common sense for the rest. Also, use your common sense and sentiment bias to know if you should take the trade or not. Most people already know that. The difficult part is indeed finding the common sense and a reliable sentiment!
The fade breakout is very similar to the trend riding (extremely similar!).
The decrease volatility strategy is a triangle one, using the trend riding stuff for entry/exit.

Disappointing

I bought this book because I read the author's blog and thought it would teach me something new about trading. However, I found that topics were discussed "on the surface" without going into "how to do it". I get the feeling that she is saving the bulk of her information for her online course, which you have to pay US$700 for.

Possibly the best forex trading book I've read!

I have read over 10 books on forex trading and this is quite possibly the best one I've purchased. I wish I would have found it before the other ones as then I would have saved a lot of money. 7 Winning Strategies is a very practical guide to improving your chances at success in the forex market. I think one of the primary reasons trading strategies don't work out is because the trader applied the wrong strategy during certain market conditions. Grace Cheng's book covers different strategies to use for different market dynamics. It details how a trader can apply these strategies and it tells you what sort of market conditions the different strategies work best in - and best of all, it does it clearly and concisely. You still need to think for yourself, but this makes it a whole lot easier to plan your trade and trade your plan! The groundwork that's been done is right on.

Actually, I was aware of Grace Cheng before purchasing this book and just like another reviewer, I didn't have a very positive impression of her because her Web site looks kind of funky. Don't let that deter you from reading this outstanding book. This book literally taught me not to judge a book by its cover. If you read it and really apply your learnings to developing a strategy that is suited to your trading style, you'd understand just how valuable the strategies detailed in this book are.
