Just bad writing. If you want to understand what the Dao De Jing meant to the Chinese when it was written, read Hendrick's 1992 "Lao Tzu: Te-Tao Ching - A New Translation Based on the Recently Discovered Ma-wang-tui Texts"

I nicely made edition of a classic.

I'm not going to comment here about the quality of the actual content of the Tao Te Ching. With hundreds of publications, you can find longer and better written analyses of Lao Tzu's writings elsewhere. What I will say, however, is that I do find this particular translation very well done. Some passages are a bit challenging to understand at first glance, but I prefer a translation that stays as true to the original as possible over ones that make changes and assumptions to aid the reader.

The actual construction of the book is absolutely fantastic. The passages are spread out with calligraphy of an important word or phrase from said passage on the opposing page face. It's minimal but beautiful, and I believe the art adds to the reading experiences. The paper stock is more thicker and more sturdy than standard novel paper, and the cover sleeve is matte (as apposed to the awful glossy covers that attract fingerprints and smudges).

Beautiful book

As someone who is new to Eastern philosophy, this book is an accessible, and poetic take on the TTC. I've compared to other editions and the translations vary tremendously not just in style but in use of metaphor, word choice, and cadence. With an ancient text written in a non-wetern tongue, it's difficult for a neophyte to know if you're getting the straight dope.

That being said, it's a beautiful work, and I've found tremendous insight and meaning in it. I would guess that the translation is geared toward contemporary westerners, as opposed academics, and like any work of philosophy or religious thought, it's important to take it with a grain of salt, and consider that it was written for an ancient world. That aside, it's still an essential read that touches on countless human truths. The deceptively simple passages of the TTC can have a profound influence on the way one looks at one's world.

Personally, I feel slightly more at peace, more understanding of the ebbs and flows of life, and from that stronger and more clear-headed, every time I read from this book. One thing the eastern traditions of Taoism and Buddhism seem to stress is seeing the truth for what it is, not believing in signs and symbols, or what you think you know or what you have been telling yourself, and this book illuminates that notion. In a media-saturated society oozing deceptive advertising and political punditry, it's great meditate on reality once in a while.

An arrow straight to the heart

I asked a couple of emptiness questions via e-mail to bhikshuni Ven. Samten at Sravasti Abbey (Washington). She's the closest link I have to Ven. Thubten Chodron, whom I deeply admire and respect (though I don't know her in person yet). Ven. Samten generously suggested that I read "Insight into Emptiness" seeking answers.

I bought the book the exact day she gave me that advice, as a friend of mine was at the States in training. He got the book at his hotel at an incredibly high speed (two days after purchase) and began reading himself. He finally got back to Mexico and delivered the text to me. What can I say? Even the shining cover is inspiring!

Back from work yesterday, I started reading "Insight into Emptiness" in the bus. While reading I was so moved, I can’t even express clearly what I felt. I experienced a soft ache in my heart, incommensurable happiness, and an immense feeling of gratitude. I made a very big effort to hold my tears back. The tremendous love and compassion with which the book is written, is a constant journey back home.

I really can’t find the proper words to thank Ven. Chodron and Geshe Jampa Tegchok for such a blissful gift. The book is a true jewel. It's beautifully written: extremely clear (I'm Mexican and even I can understand it), wise and plagued with invaluable information. It masterly summarizes many Buddhist precepts and eloquently explains emptiness from a wide variety of angles.

An arrow straight to the heart! A must purchase indeed!

Excellent!

Truly an excellent intro (and then some) to Emptiness. In depth enough to deeply ground you in liberating concepts but not so exhaustive that you're left in conceptual no-mans land. This book condenses a lifetime of study, experience and blessings for our benefit. It really is an exceedingly wonderful offering, intelligent and mind opening but plain spoken enough for anyone. Highly recommended.

This book is one you will keep with you all through this lifetime, looking again and again at it to turn away from mistaken concepts and to be encouraged that you too can fully understand reality as it is and become a fully awakened being in order to help end all suffering. It's so beautiful and helpful. I recommend it highly.

A nice book. But

A nice book. But. It is about the Anime, not the manga, which was what I was expecting/looking for. It doesn't say anywhere that this is about the Anime, and it would have been a good warning. Other than that, it is a very nice compilation of all things Anime related, from pics of the world to descriptions of the characters and their abilities. It is all in Japanese though, so if you don't know how to read it, it doesn't help much.

Missing pages

There is an error in at least some of the printings. I sent mine back to Amazon, only to have the replacement have the same error. Page 253 has been replaced by page 353, with 353 also in the 353 spot. So you lose some of the GI drugs on page 253. Totally baffled why this review was rejected the first time but it was. Just trying to let you know what you might be getting with this book.
