Apocalypse: Diary of a Survivor, by Matt Pike

“I guess it was inevitable – the end of the world we know – the end of humanity.

Finding out early was a gift, surviving impact night was a miracle, living to tell the tale, well, that was the price I will pay, forever.

There’s no going back now.”

Award-winning author Matt J Pike returns with a captivating new series.
For teenager Jack Baldwin, life as he knows it has always had an easy rhythm – family, friends, school and a regular schedule of Xbox. But when he’s tipped off to impending global catastrophe, his casual existence is shaken to the core.
Emerging from impact night, when a comet wipes out most of Earth’s population, Jack quickly realises the real battle for survival has just begun. As supplies run low, the military disappears, neighbours turn on each other and the body count mounts, fellow survivors fast become the biggest threat of all. But they hadn’t counted on his resources and resourcefulness.
A gripping survival tale told in diary format.

"An interesting and thought-provoking twist on armageddon fiction"
Michael Owen-Brown

"Pike manages to capture the essence of a teenager, coupled with the devastation and effects of losing so much, so quickly. He clearly researched all the details, and this a believable tale of death and destruction."

About the Author
Like the legendary R M Williams, Matt was born in Jamestown in rural South Australia. But that’s where the remarkable similarities between the two end. While Reginald went from bushman to world-renowned millionaire outback clothing designer, Matt is a complete dag who was lured by the city lights of Adelaide. Kindergarten in the big smoke was a culture shock, but it was here he first discovered his love of storytelling. In high school that love found an outlet in a series of completely unflattering cartoons about fellow students and teachers alike. He survived long enough to turn his art into a successful career in multimedia design but, like a zombified leech, the lure of the written word gnawed at him, forcing him to pen his first novel, the award-winning sci-fi comedy epic Kings of the World. It was followed the next year by Amazon Australia dystopian sci-fi best-seller Apocalypse: Diary of a Survivor. Matt donates part proceeds of each book sold to find a cure for Rett Syndrome, a neurological condition that affects the youngest of his three children, Abby. As a gorgeous Rett angel, Abby cannot walk, talk or use her hands in a meaningful way. So not only is each book purchase a ticket to fantastically rounded, character-driven, hilarious and poignant sci-fi awesomeness, it also wraps you in a warm feeling of knowing you’ve made a difference to people who deserve your help the most. Like the zombified leech, it’s a no-brainer.

It's the end of the world as we know it ... and I feel grime
By MA Owen-Brown
An interesting and thought-provoking twist on armageddon fiction aimed at teens and young adults. Unlike most other stories in this genre, which usually tell sweeping multi-character tales exploring the aftermath of a world gone to hell, Apocalypse is a first-person story that focuses very narrowly on one young man and his struggle to cope with the emotional toll of isolation, fear and day to day survival. He's a likeable guy and an easily identifiable protagonist living in a smallish Australian city.

What I found really engaging was the thought that the author has put in to the realistic effects of a massive asteroid strike on our planet. The initial impact as the huge rock breaks up in our atmosphere is followed by dust clouds, massive tsunamis, the collapse of all modern infrastructure and a rapid descent into anarchy. Interestingly, some of the protagonist's biggest problems are caused by a thick, soupy grime that settles over everything - global devastation sure sounds icky. It's obvious that the author has thought deeply about the domino effects of a major catastrophe and this adds a solid feeling of authenticity to events.

The downside - the ending will probably polarise readers and at times the narrative could do with a little more finesse. Some may think there is too much information specific to the city in which it's set - it may have had wider appeal in a more generic setting. But it was an enjoyable, fast-paced read with strong characterisation that kept me turning the pages. Plus there was a hot love interest and some nifty MacGyver moments. Bonus points for that. Keen to see where our hero goes next if there's a sequel.

Surprise: A Fairly Well Written Apocalypse Novel
By A. Keffer
Here's a surprise: An apocalypse novel that is a very good read. The diary format worried me at first, but Pike carried it off well from beginning to end. The book is set in Adelaide, Australia, and if you use Google Earth, you can follow the streets and neighborhoods of the setting. A strong point for the book is that the disaster itself is credible and reasonably well-thought-out. Other than the survivor whose diary this book purports to be, characters are not developed in any detail, but the survivor does come to life to a fair degree. If you enjoy this genre, I think you'll find this book holds your attention. Also, for us in the USA, the Australian terms and locations are engaging.
