When a young man washes up, naked, on the sands of St Piran, he is quickly rescued by the villagers. From the retired village doctor and the schoolteacher, to the beachcomber and the owner of the local bar, the priest's wife and the romantic novelist, they take this lost soul into their midst. But what the villagers don't know is that Joe Haak worked as an analyst and has fled the City amid fears of a worldwide banking collapse caused by a computer program he invented.
But is the end of the world really nigh? And what of the whale that lurks in the bay?

Absolutely brilliant
By Suze Lavender
St Piran in Cornwall is a little village with a close community. One day a young man washes up on the beach. He's naked and the villagers don't know who he is. The people who find him take him to the retired village doctor and soon the man regains consciousness. He's been rescued by a whale and not much later it has to be the other way around. The man's name is Joe Haak and he manages to make the whole village work together to reach a nearly impossible goal. Why is he in St Piran?
Joe Haak writes computer programs for a large bank in London. He's designed a program that can predict the future, because it's able to see which implications certain important events, decisions and incidents will have. The program's name is Cassie. Because of Cassie's predictions Joe thinks the bank is in financial trouble and he's fled from his workplace. He thinks Cassie's apocalypse forecast is correct and he will try to survive it together with the inhabitants of St Piran. Has the program really been able to make an accurate prediction? And what will happen now that the future is uncertain, will the man who was delivered on the beach by the whale save the village from the impending doom?
Not Forgetting the Whale is a clever philosophical story. John Ironmonger writes about what would happen if the world we're taking for granted collapses all of a sudden. Joe Haak is an interesting person. He's on the run, but when he stops he doesn't hide, he's determined to make things better. Joe Haak is a survivor and he's smart when it comes to computer programming and preparing for dire situations, but on a personal level he isn't always very wise. He falls in love with women who aren't right for him, he works in an environment that isn't suitable for him and he makes rash decisions without thinking about the consequences. His interaction with the villagers makes this story so interesting, somehow most of them immediately like him and if they don't he negotiates until he has exactly what he needs. Soon he's part of St Piran's tight community. The villagers accept him as one of their own. I liked the sense of community and I enjoyed seeing how the newcomer manages to conquer his spot among them.
John Ironmonger's writing is witty and sharp. I loved his smart thinking which leads to interesting twists and turns in the story. Joe Haak is as prepared as he can be, but even though he has Cassie unforeseen circumstances are making things harder. When a lot of difficulties are coming their way nobody in the village ever complains, the inhabitants try to think of workable solutions instead. I loved that aspect, it's exactly as it should be, but not how it was expected to be. Not Forgetting the Whale is a fantastic story about a man who washes ashore, a huge whale and a very realistic apocalypse, it's an absolutely brilliant book.

It's nicely written but I just don't care about share market ...
By Lisa Davis
I'm halfway through and seriously thinking of stopping. It's nicely written but I just don't care about share market prediction modelling and it just seems vaguely objectifying of women. The book's boastful sort of warning that it might restore my faith in human nature doesn't really seem earned.
