The Iron Woman is a novel of manners by the American writer Margaret Deland (1857–1945) set in the 19th century fictional locale of Mercer, an Ohio River community that represents Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Margaret Deland (n�e Margaretta Wade Campbell) (February 23, 1857 – January 13, 1945) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet. She also wrote an autobiography in two volumes. She is generally considered part of the literary realism movement.

Well written, a Must Read

This historical novel has characters that are very real, who could all be placed in a modern day setting. Three families with four children, trying to raise them the best they know how. How much does a career mother influence her children in regards to love and work? Does a child miss something in a mother if he is adopted? How should faults and forgiveness be accepted? This book raises many questions pertinent to today, without giving all the answers. Exceptionally well written.
