The late C. Vann Woodward was one of America's most prominent historians. His books have won every major history award--including the Pulitzer, Bancroft, and Parkman Prizes--and he has served as president of both the American Historical Association and the Organization of American Historians. The Future of the Past collects two decades worth of Woodward's most significant essays, addresses, and major book reviews, including two important presidential addresses--"The Future of the Past" and "Clio with Soul" (his trenchant assessment of Afro-American history)--as well as essays on changing historical concerns of the past decades, the value of comparative history, the South in Reconstruction times and the South today, and the use of fiction in history (and history in fiction). Woodward has written illuminating introductory comments on each section and offers an incisive general introduction about history and the direction the profession is taking today. Whether reviewing William Safire's novel Freedom or evaluating Henry Adam's portrait of Jefferson, Woodward's essays reflect a lifetime of thought on history and historical writing, and are essential reading for anyone concerned with either.

Eminent historian Woodward debunks the lingering "antislavery myth" that portrays the Northern states as a bastion of tolerance before and after the Civil War. It was Southerners, not Yanks, who launched the antislavery press in America, he shows, arguing further that the postbellum, segregated South adopted many devices originally developed in the North to keep blacks "in their place." Turning to Dixie, he blasts the aristocratic pretensions of the elite classes by comparing them to equally pretentious Russian serf-owners. In other pieces he profiles "subversive" Thomas Jefferson, assesses the enormous failure of Reconstruction and gauges the sudden impetus for the Southern literary renaissance. A major theme of these 22 erudite essays, addresses, reviews and papers is the myth of the U.S. as "an innocent nation in a wicked world," and how decision-makers must change their thinking to accommodate the fact that we are no longer militarily unassailable.

YA-- Historian Woodward's purpose is to relate the present and future to the past, "interests, expectations, opportunities, problems, influences" not usually acknowledged as interrelating. This collection of 22 "papers" on history (divided into six sections prefaced with background commentary) deals largely with Southern issues--emancipation, reconstruction, renaissance, mythology--but as well reflects on the historian's complex role: his interpretation and reinterpretation of events, and others' revisions and re-creations of them. A book for serious students. --Carolyn Trachta, formerly at Clear Creek High School, TX 2

From Library Journal
In this collection, our foremost historian of the American South offers essays and addresses covering almost three decades (1960-88). Woodward compares the history of race discrimination, slavery, emancipation, and Reconstruction in the American South, "plantation America," and Russia. He defends history as a "third something" located between science and art. He analyzes the roll of imagination in the writing of both fiction and history. These essays confirm the skill and good judgment of this subtle and profound scholar, who has never grown doctrinaire, even in defense of his own positions (e.g., where he responds to criticisms of his Strange History of Jim Crow). In Woodward's hands, history remains an exciting venture. Highly recommended for scholars and specialists.
