About the Author

Randy Knight taught introductory physics for 32 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, where he is Professor Emeritus of Physics. Professor Knight received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching and this book, as well as College Physics: A Strategic Approach, co-authored with Brian Jones and Stuart Field. Professor Knight’s research interests are in the field of laser spectroscopy and environmental science. When he’s not in front of a computer, you can find Randy hiking, sea kayaking, playing the piano, or spending time with his wife Sally and their six cats.

Wrong answers in the back, so disappointing

This book is good in the fact that it simplifies the challenging concepts of physics and has diagrams that make it easier to learn the material. As a student trying to learn physics, I did the practice problems at the end of the chapter. The answers to odd questions are at the back of the book, but this book had the WRONG answers in the back of the book. TOO many times to count, the wrong answer was found in the back of the book, and this is bad for students who are already confused about physics. For instance, it would ask to find the distance in meters, but the answer gave a random velocity.

Awsome book for scientists and engineers!

First off let me start with saying that I am going to compare this to a Serway's style of books. Both are good but just different in their approach. The strengths of Knight's book is that it approaches physics in a conceptual approach with heavy analysis of problem and then focuses on problem solving strategies. I like understanding the concept before just bashing away at problem solving. Knight's book gives you just enough details to understand the problem as a physicist with out flooding you with too many details. In short this book teaches you how to be a scientist. It has a very smooth transition to new and more complex subject that are related to the previous ideas presented. I learned from Serway's book in college for my calculus base physics and I found that one to be mechanistic and heavy handed on problems and very equation heavy with out demonstrating the concept a good as in Knight's book. Serway's is a good encyclopedic reference but I think that Knight's shows the art of thinking like a scientist.

EXCELLENT BOOK, NO VIDEO MATERIAL

One of the best books on airway manipulation I have ever seen. The photographs are excellent and so are the associated discussions. However, the online site has no videos in spite of the promotion of this aspect of the book. This was disappointing. Videos equivalent to the photographs would be outstanding. The book is worth the money without the videos. I highly recommend it for both residents and practitioners.

The naming industry sprang up in the 1980s to deal with the complexities of brand identity, the legal maze of eligibility and the pitfalls of translation. In this encyclopedic compilation, Rivkin, proprietor of a U.S. naming consultancy and Sutherland, a Canadian author and editor, mix business with linguistics in an attempt to demystify the name game. In Part I they distinguish among the basic types of names: descriptive, allusive and coined. Part II, on the naming process, offers a massive amount of recycled information, from right-brain/left-brain functioning to obvious brainstorming methods � la marketing 101; a blizzard of lexicographic, phonetic and linguistic factoids; a brief dissertation on the origins of speech; a litany of familiar cautionary tales about the perils of translation; and much more. All of this is exhaustively researched and appropriately cited; while some of it bears a direct relation to naming, a great deal comes across as too much icing. Part III, an overview of naming firms and alternatives, concludes with Rivkin's own finding that companies consider naming consultants less effective than internal task forces or agencies. About the Author

Steve Rivkin, the proprietor of the highly successful U.S. naming consultancy Rivkin & Associates, is the co-author of many books on branding, among them IdeaWise, The New Positioning, and Differentiate or Die, which have sold in the hundreds of thousands. A Canadian, Fraser Sutherland is the author of 11 books. As an editor he's been involved in major dictionary projects spread across three countries.

A passionate, intelligent guide to those names we buy

The book provides a thorough introduction to the evolution and significance of brand names. It's an easy read for those of us without degrees in linguistics and covers a great deal of ground. I particularly liked the anecdotes liberally spread throughout.

Of particular interest to me was a chapter devoted to global brand names. While I would have liked to see more attention devoted to this topic - since most brand names created today should first be given a "global analysis" - I found some wonderful anecdotes in the chapter. Here are a few:

"Standardizing the taste is one thing. Standardizing the marketing is another." Even though Heineken is kept standard globally, its marketing is widely tailored to each market. For example, in Asia beer is marketed as a sophisticated, almost feminine, product while brewers in Australia position it as quite the opposite.

Nestle succeeds globally because it creates products specific to local markets. For example, it offers an instant coffee specifically for India called Sunrise, blended with chicory to appeal to local taste buds. The company may have a dozen worldwide brands but has more than a hundred regional brands and more than 700 local brands.

Be careful when taking your brand name into new markets. Consider the challenges that these local brands would face if they were introduced into the US:

* Bimbo bread (Spain)

* Zit soft drinks (Greece)

* Pschitt soft drink (France)

The "Comprehensive" Inside Story of the Brands We Buy

"The Making of a Name" is a terrific, comprehensive book on names, namers, and naming. I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether you are an entrepenuer in the midst of launching a new company, product or service, a seasoned marketer, or quite frankly, you just like names and words. "The Making of a Name" is chock full of naming anecdotes, hints, tips, and history (I was especially interested in the tid-bits about the brands we're all familiar with).

By the end of the book, you'll know names--inside and out. What makes a good name, what makes a bad name, how names are created (and in some cases, re-created), and a ton more. You'll be hard pressed to hear, read, see, or think of a name in the same light!

In an overcommunicated world, the words we choose to name things are very important if you want to catch fire with a market and be remembered by consumers. This book is enormously helpful to anyone bringing out a new product or service. It is also extremely entertaining to read -- a winner on every count.

Criminal Minds first aired on CBS, and ran from September 22, 2005 until May 10, 2006. Criminal Minds follows an elite team of FBI criminal analysts, known as the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), as its members travel the country working to solve grisly murder mysteries and arrest the serial killers responsible for them.

Criminal Minds premiered amid a rush of other crime-solving programs such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Crossing, Law & Order: SUV, and Medium, many of which were also broadcast on CBS. Given this context, the immediate task for Criminal Mindsthe latest newcomer to the television-crime-scene-investigation crazewas to somehow set itself apart from the crowd. To accomplish this, the show relied on both its cast of actors and its focus on psychological profiling.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Charles Limley is a native of Colorado. After earning bachelors degrees in both English Literature and Humanities from the University of ColoradoBoulder, he entered the world of professional writing. He began his work with Hyperink during the fall of 2011. In addition to writing, Limley is an avid reader. He also loves bicycles, and has completed several long-distance bicycle tours.

In portraying these crimes, each episode of Criminal Minds becomes its own mini-narrative placed within a larger overall story in which the BAU team works together to become not only a professional team, but a personal team as well. As the season unfolds, characters personal struggles, fears, and doubts are revealed, and as they are, teammates must figure out how best to help each other. In this way, the members of the BAU team are constantly focused on providing relief and help to those in need, despite being surrounded by a world of deranged, senseless, and bloody killings.

This fundamental theme is attested to by Agent Gideon in episode 6, L.D.S.K., when he reminds Agent Reid that for a psychological profiler, the most effective weapon is the ability to empathizeto humanize an unsubs victim (TV.com, Criminal Minds: Episode Guide).

Gideon tells Reid that only by reversing the dehumanizing effects of crime and murder, returning to the victims their dignity and worth as individuals, can an effective and accurate profile of the perpetrator be constructed. Thus, solving crimes and arresting serial killers is ultimately an act of recognizing and maintaining the value inherent in each individual victim...

Awesome Guide!

This is an excellent viewer's guide for "Criminal Minds Season 1!" It gives easy-to-read and accurate summaries of all the episodes, especially stories that spill over into multiple episodes. I'm a huge fan of Criminal Minds, but it's easy to get lost if you miss a couple episodes. With Limley's guide I was able to get all caught up so I could better follow whatever episode I'm watching. Plus, all the extra facts about the actors, the show, and even real crimes included in this book help me have a way better time watching the show. I plan on checking out the rest of Hyperink's guides, and especially the other CM quicklets by Charles Limley!
