Nietzsche next argues that a new post-Christian religion can arise out of the affirmation of the world disclosed to philosophy. Then, turning to the implications of the new ontology for morality and politics, Nietzsche argues that these can be reconstituted on the fundamental insights of the new philosophy. Nietzsche's comprehensive depiction of this anti-Platonic philosophy ends with a chapter on nobility, in which he contends that what can now be publicly celebrated as noble in our species are its highest achievements of mind and spirit.

Very interesting

Since I was reading Beyond Good and Evil on my own, I ordered both Lampert's commentary and Douglas Burnham's Reading Nietzsche: An Analysis of Beyond Good and Evil They are both very well written. From Lampert I learned the importance of Darwinian theories for Nietzsche (which led me to Richardson's book Nietzsche's New Darwinism ). I found Burnham's notes on Nietzsche's eugenics in the text very helpful (although this is not a very palatable part of Nietzsche's thought), and that this aspect is not really dealt with clearly by Lampert. Both commentaries are great, but if I had to buy just one, maybe I would choose Burnham's.

Professor Lampert's book about Beyond Good and Evil (BGE) is a great starting point for supplementing Nietzsche's text. It's an affirmative philosophy for those of us that believe we are a part of this world and not pinning our hopes on a 'transcendental' heaven after we endure our time on earth as a 'sinful' creature. Amor Fati!

Must-have for music students.

These anthologies are breathtakingly expensive, but they are important to any music education because they are thoroughly comprehensive. Rather than provide a history of music, these recordings explain principles and ideas in a concrete way and present examples.

I did not always adore the layout of the chapters, but this book is absolutely a great buy for History of Western Art Music courses or just for a resource. Having the matching textbook works great for the examples listed throughout that text. I was able to sell my bookstore copy of both materials to Amazon. I do wish the offered price for selling these was a tad greater considering what I paid, but it's better than these sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

Colloquial German, not folklore

I first saw this book while living in southwest Germany five years ago. Its less about German folklore than it is about colloquial German. As a linguist, this is a fantastic volume. German language, when compared to English, is remarkably limited in its ability to throw out four-letter words. So the Germanic peoples developed some pretty entertaining idioms over time. If you speak any German, this is a must for understanding colloquial speech and command of the only original swear word in the language. Its insightful but certainly not 'folklore' in the American sense.

My review would be 3.25 stars on average, but sadly, that's not possible.

The thesis is in many respects highly questionable. Dundes posits first that there is a quality known as national character. Second, he posits that the German national character is highly scatological, which he bases on what another reviewer has more aptly termed an analysis of German colloquial speech and writing. (A folklorist may think of colloquial speech and writing as part of folklore, but the layman probably thinks more specifically of oral storytelling when he hears the word "folklore".) This second argument may be the best-supported in the book, though Dundes doesn't go far enough in comparative anthropology to demonstrate that this quality is unusually German. The most questionable part of the thesis is in his conclusions regarding what light this supposed anal-erotic character of the Germans and their language is supposed to shed on German history. If you accept the Freudian thesis that anal-eroticism is the underlying cause of parsimoniousness, orderliness, etc., then this part of the thesis makes sense on its own terms. But what if anal-eroticism were merely a parallel aspect of German "national character" (accepting for the moment the notion that there is such a thing), along with parsimoniousness, orderliness, etc.? And there are other arguments to explain, for instance, the rise of Nazism--historical, philosophical, etc.--that do not require this Freudian analysis, which Dundes does not consider. The thesis may be fine for you if you are already a Freudian, but I am not so easily convinced.

The content, on the other hand, is wide-ranging, well laid-out and entertaining. Ignoring the thesis, this makes excellent bathroom reading, actually. And who but the most squeamish of prudes doesn't like a poop joke? (If anything, this undermines Dundes' thesis more--we all find this stuff funny. Dundes admits that, but doesn't treat it as seriously as he should, which is somewhat disingenuous.)

A last note: I was walking with a friend in Munich, when I happened to repeat to him a favorite expression from the book--"Wie der Fisch stets in dem Wasser lebt, so die Schei�e in dem Arschloch klebt." An old woman passing by gave a hearty guffaw. She was perhaps seventysomething. So the book could be very useful to anyone who wants simply a handle on (a certain class of) German colloquial expressions. The book gave me a small moment of humanity, in the form of a turd.

Excellent book for Oracle DBA who need to manage SS

This is an excellent resource for Oracle DBAs who have to manage SQL Server databases. The author understands an Oracle DBA's perspective of looking at the database and has explained the how-to for SS DB from that perspective. Understanding the architecture of a new database can be daunting, esp. if you are an Oracle DBA and know the importance of understanding the architecture. I have not found many books which do a good job at it.
The book is complete in the topics and can get an Oracle DBA or anyone who wants to manage a SS Database, to get to the job with the help of the understanding that is gained from this book.

A wish this book had been around years ago

A fellow DBA at my company and I have remarked over the years that it would be so great if there was a book for Oracle DBAs that explained the correspondence between commands and techniques for SQL Server versus Oracle. Now it's here so we ordered a copy. These days, most employers want you to take care of SQL Server databases as well as Oracle ones so this book fills an important need. I will update this review when I've finished the book. I'm only on Chapter five now but, so far, excellent.

Stunning, enlightening, and informative.

A few years ago, I wrote a paper on the original cuisine of the western hemisphere before European exploration.Prepared for the drudgery of a paper, I checked this book out of the library, expecting myself to be put to sleep by the dryness of the topic.How wrong I was! Ms. Coe's book was stunning in how it broadened my understanding of food. Every chapter is chock full of interesting research and conclusions. Even the index was remarkable for its detail. You will be informed and entertained by amazing stories about what was eaten, how it was eaten, and why it was eaten. You will learn the surprisingly interesting history of corn. You will learn the origins of the algae spirulina, recently come to our health food stores. The fascinating story behind the newly popular grain amaranth will interest you. Many old theories (eg, that certain Mesoamerican indians were cannibalistic), are in one stroke shown to be false. The cuisine of the western hemisphere *IS* the cuisine of the world. The staple foods of Europe and Asia are often Maya/Aztec/Inca in origin. The humble potato and tomato, for instance, DID NOT EXIST *ANYWHERE* in the Eastern hemisphere until they were brought back from the west. Makes me wonder WHAT, exactly, did the Italians eat before they had the tomato?

In the aftermath, two young men, Elmer Wayne Henley and David Brooks, Corll's two main accomplices in the heinous crimes, confessed that they had been forced to participate against their will, and Corll himself - by now having been shot dead by Henley - was the lone culprit in the torturous murders. But was he?

Not written as a book, but in a "screenplay" form

Returned this within 10 minutes of buying. THIS IS NOT A BOOK, but a screenplay. I have read a couple of books on Dean Corll and was very excited to read this too. Unfortunately, this is written as a play with stage or screen directions. No disrespect to the author, but I was lead to believe that this was a novel and not a play/screenplay. I reread the Amazon description before I returned the item to make sure I hadn't made a mistake. I hadn't. If you are interested in the Dean Corll story as I am, this may be something that interests you. I was just not interested in reading this in a screenplay format. Too bad.

About the Author
Claire Burkhard has been a lacemaker for nearly thirty years. She was a founder member of the Federation of Swiss Lacemakers and had travelled throughout Europe in the course of her research. She has published widely in lace journals and her first book, a selection of sixteenth-century Swiss patterns, appeared in 1986. She now lives in Switzerland.

fresh and inspiring

This book contains designs I had not witnessed before. Definitely inspiring and occasionally unusual. If you are tired of the mundane lace patterns then this book is for you. It has traditional appearing projects as well as contemporary pieces. I found it a wonderful addition to my references.

Straddling 1947

The British experience in India is a subject that has been given thorough literary treatment during the past century, and most of these books have tried to highlight some aspect of the cultural contrast between east and west. E.M. Forster's "A Passage to India" is perhaps the most comprehensive of these, but Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's "Heat and Dust" makes an admirable effort to contribute to the Forsterian legacy by updating the milieu to a post-independence setting while keeping one foot firmly in the past.

The novel concerns a young English woman, the narrator, who arrives in Bombay intending to make it her home for a while and to reconstruct the story of the doomed marriage of her grandfather, a law officer named Douglas Rivers, and his first wife, Olivia, from a collection of intriguing letters that Olivia had written to her sister Marcia. From the beginning Jhabvala splits the novel into two parallel narratives, alternating between the Riverses in 1923 and the narrator in India fifty years later, who presents her adventures, thoughts, and reflections in the form of a journal.

Olivia Rivers is a bored housewife who has little to do besides playing the piano and chatting with the other British officers' wives until she becomes enamored with the charming Indian prince, called the Nawab, who governs the district Douglas serves. A living emblem of amoral corruption and aristocratic gluttony, the Nawab dwells in an ancestral palace that arrogantly overlooks the wretched slums of the neighboring town and supports an entourage of servants and sycophantic companions including an effeminate Englishman named Harry. Jhabvala employs these elements to shape a dramatic arc that leads from extramarital attraction to adultery and finally to Olivia's disgrace following an ugly scandal for which she could never be forgiven back in England.

The narrator's analogous existence within the pages gives the novel an even broader context; she too falls in love with an Indian man, although a much humbler one, a meek clerk named Inder Lal. She also observes that India is a magnet for Europeans in search of a certain spirituality that they have failed to find in Western religions; in particular she meets a young Englishman who has become a Hindu ascetic, calling himself Chid, but who cannot handle the hardships of a land of such disease and poverty. The novel's title refers to the general climate of the region of which the narrator writes, a scorching exacerbation of the hopeless squalor in which the vast majority of the population lives.

I am aware that Jhabvala has written screenplays based on classic novels, including Forster's, for the Merchant-Ivory film team, and I confess that I somewhat expected "Heat and Dust" to be a pastiche of Forster, but I was pleased to find that Jhabvala, although like Forster a lucid and elegant prose stylist, has a distinctive literary voice, specifically in her shrewd eye for the particularities of Indian culture. From the suttee stones, morbid monuments to Hindu widows who have immolated themselves in their husbands' funeral pyres, to the British cemeteries memorializing the soldiers fallen in the 1857 mutinies, "Heat and Dust" is a valuable tour through 1920s and 1970s India.

A Powerful, Beautifully Written Novel Of Two Women & India

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's powerful and beautifully written novel of an "outrageous" Anglo-Indian romance in 1920s Khatm and Satipur won the Booker Prize in 1983. The author has crafted parallel tales of two young women, distantly related and separated by two generations. Anne, the story's narrator, travels to India to discover more about the mystery surrounding her grandfather's first wife, Olivia.
Douglas Rivers, an upper echelon English civil servant, married and brought his adored wife, Olivia, with him to India in 1923, during the British Raj. She was a beautiful, spoiled and spirited young woman, who found it difficult to adjust to life in the British colonial community of Satipur. Feeling suffocated by the inbred group she was forced to socialize with, Olivia longed for independence, intellectual stimulation and a more passionate life. She hoped that a baby would solve her problems but found it more difficult to become pregnant than she had thought. Shortly after their arrivel in India, Douglas, Olivia and some of the more important members of the community were invited to the palace of the Nawab of Khatm and she was immediately intrigued by the handsome, charismatic prince. He courted her friendship aggressively and then the friendship turned passionate. When faced with a crisis Olivia was forced to make life altering decisions which would have far reaching effects and cause scandal throughout British India and England that would last for generations.
Anne stays in the town where her grandfather and Olivia lived fifty years before. Trying to piece together the puzzle that was Olivia and discover what motivated her to change her life so drastically, Anne visits the places her "step-grandmother" frequented and interviews people who knew her or knew of her. She also reads the letters and journals that Olivia wrote so long ago, and oddly enough, Anne ventures into experiences similar to Olivia's adventures, but more acceptable in our modern time. Anne's spiritual and sensual journey in the 1970s parallels Olivia's as the color, heat, exotic landscapes, and people of India penetrate her western upbringing. Anne writes in her own diary: "Fortunately, during my first few months here, I kept a journal, so I have some record of my early impressions. If I were to try and recollect them now, I might not be able to do so. They are no longer the same because I myself am no longer the same. India always changes people, and I have been no exception."
This short and delicately written novel packs a powerful punch and paints an extraordinary portrait of British colonials in India, with their sense of cultural and moral superiority over the local population. However, even more compelling and unusual, is the story of two women, generations apart, who follow similar paths under the spell of India.

Evocative

Jhabvala's book, Heat and Dust, is set India, in two eras - the 1920's and the 1970's. The two time periods are brought together through the narrator. She has journeyed to India to research the life of her grandfather's first wife, Olivia, who left him to marry an Indian prince. The narrator chronicles her own Indian adventures while telling the reader what she has learned of Olivia. The device of using the journal is very well done, and allows the reader to see how the lives of these two women intersect in very profound ways.
The descriptions of India throughout the book in both eras were amazing and very evocative, both of the individual eras and of the landscape.
While technically very well written, I did not find the book fully enjoyable. I did not feel as though the characters of either of the two women were fully fleshed out, and I found this distracting throughout the book. Many of the minor characters were even less well developed, and this made them seem like little more than stereotypes.
While not the best book I have read recently, it is short and a quick read, and worth the time.
