A decent book with misleading marketing

While this book is marketed as the end-all of training books that gives every exercise you need along with sensible workout and nutrition plans, it falls a bit short of that promise.

It does have a TON of exercises with pictures and tips on how to do them correctly, and thus, it's a good reference book. The organization of the exercises, however, is poorly executed. While they appear in their proper categories, such as "back," there are no further details about the many exercises that follow as to which particular parts of the back that the exercises target.

It also doesn't indicate which exercises are compound, mass-builders, which are isolation exercises, and which are in the middle. Unless you really know what you're doing, you won't know what exercises to do and why.

The workout programs given in the book seem to be thrown together kind of haphazardly, and while they'll keep you "busy" in the gym and are better than being completely random, they're not the most effective in terms of building muscle and getting stronger. If you get bored of routines easily, you might like the fact that there are many variations that you can do for each muscle group.

The nutritional section calls for a diet high in protein, moderate in fats, and low in carbs. This is fine for losing weight if done correctly, but definitely is not optimal for building muscle. Scientific studies have clearly shown the connection between high carb intake and building muscle. In fact, if you don't eat enough carbs, you'll not only be short on the glycogen necessary for muscle synthesis, you'll have a VERY hard time eating enough overall calories to build any appreciable amount of muscle.

All in all, if you're looking for a nice collection of exercises for every muscle group, you will like this book. To be honest, however, The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding : The Bible of Bodybuilding, Fully Updated and Revised is better for this (and better overall).

If you're looking for some guidance in creating a workout and nutrition plan that will help you build muscle and lose fat as effectively as possible, then I recommend Bigger Leaner Stronger: The Simple Science of Building the Ultimate Male Body (The Lean Muscle Series).

Big Book is Big Disappointment

The concept of Men's Health Big Book of Exercises is great: collect hundreds of exercises, group them by muscle group and add some background information and nutritional advice. There you go: the workout manual to make all others obsolete. But despite the lyrical reviews posted here, I found this book disappointing. In short: the collection of exercises is great, but the way they are presented is not optimal. A serious framework to construct your own training plan is absent and the nutritional information is downright silly.

EXERCISES

What I liked about this book is the sheer number of exercises; they are the reason I continue to use this book every now and then. Each exercise comes with at least one clear picture and has some handy little performance tips scattered around. However, this being the main event of the book, there are a number of omissions that I would consider flaws.

First, there is no connection between the discussion of the anatomy in the beginning of each section and the exercises. It's great that you are shown the different muscles that make up the back, but in the 60 or so exercises that follow, there is no way of finding out which muscle or part thereof is targeted by which exercise. Also, if you give 15 variations of one particular exercise, it would have been logical to mark the variations in terms of level of difficulty. No such luck.

Basically, the book first gives some fairly detailed information on an entire muscle group (albeit with some less than great illustrations), but then simply dumps a long list of exercises on you. Though the number of exercises provided is much smaller, the book Strength Training Anatomy by Frederic Delavier is infinitely better. It tells you not just how to perform an exercise but also how an individual exercise targets each specific muscle. I sincerely hope Men's Health takes some cues from Delavier for their next edition of the Big Book.

TRAINING PLANS

The 'exercise plans' in the Big Book are alright, but if you are looking for a good, consistent framework to get maximal results (as opposed to just "doing something in the gym"), I feel the The Body Sculpting Bible for Men is way better. It may not have the same number of exercises, nor nice color photos like the Big Book, but I feel the overall framework of training is much more solid and consistent than the somewhat hap hazardous and confusing approach in Men's Healh Big Book.

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION

Now, if it were for the exercises and plans alone, I would still have given the book three stars, maybe even four; the sheer number of exercises makes it quite unique. Five stars would be out of the question, because the difference in content quality is too far off from some of the other books available. Still, I decided to lower the rating by one more star, because of the nutritional sections which are silly at best.

First let me say that from a magazine (such as Men's Health) I fully accept a somewhat eclectic approach. A new study comes out one month that says coffee is bad for you and the next month another says it's good - all fine. A book, however, I expect to be a bit more authoritative. This book is not.

The Big Book opts for the "high protein, medium fat, low carbs" approach. I think Susan Kleiner in her book Power Eating clearly demonstrated why a high carb, medium protein approach is far superior for building muscle and losing fat. Other than the Big Book, Kleiner backs up her story with sound scientific references. Where the Big Book settles for "A study in Denmark found...", Kleiner takes a truly scientific approach. Her conclusions are very different but much more logical and actionable for anyone who can think beyond the simplistic adage "muscle is built by protein, so the more protein I eat the more muscle I get".

Perhaps for people living in the US the nutritional advice in Men's Health Big Book makes some sense. Unspoken assumptions in the book seem to be a consequence of its orientation on the mainstream US audience. First and foremost, you are assumed to be too fat, or at least struggling with overweight. You also really like to eat a lot of fat and most certainly eat lots of animals. Also, you are not willing or able to change any of these habits.

Even within that context, the advice that comes out is sometimes downright puzzling:

- Beans, peas and corn should be avoided as they contain a lot of starch (p. 442)
- However, whole milk is fine (it's not all that much extra fat anyway), source cream is almost pure fat but hey, serving size is generally small, so go ahead! Other "healthiest" or at least "guilt free" foods: butter, pork chops, full-fat cheese, chicken thighs, coconut (p. 444 - 447). This one I found a particularly funny health advice: vinegar is good for you, so sprinkle some on your caramelized onions (!) or in your mayonnaise (!) before you spread it on your sandwich. Now, maybe I have been gone from the US for too long, but I don't think that I ever saw anyone health conscious eat mayonnaise sandwiches. But according to the Big Book, it's apparently great for your workout diet as long as you add some vinegar to it and stay clear of beans and potatoes. Yeah, right!

If you insist of eating a lot of fat, I can imagine the advice in this book to then at least cut back on carbs makes some sense. But it's obvious that this is no optimal diet advice for anyone serious about exercising. Again, Susan's Kleiner approach (high carb, medium protein and low fat) is far more sensible and much better researched. Sure, if you live in an area where KFC is considered lunch and a white sub sandwich is considered your healthy option, any truly sensible exercise diet may be out of reach. But of course, your results will never be the same as when you opt for a truly effective exercise diet.

In summary:
- Great book if you are a strength trainer and are simply looking to find some more exercise variations. The selection of exercises is unparalleled. Major flaw: the book doesn't tell you why and when you should choose one exercise over another, or which muscles each exercise targets specifically. For more detailed information on anatomy, how to exactly perform exercises and how these exercises relate to your muscles and objectives, a much better option is the classic but recently updated Strength Training Anatomy-3rd Edition (Sports Anatomy)
- If you need some guidance in setting up an exercise plan, opt for The Body Sculpting Bible for Men, Revised Edition: The Way to Physical Perfection instead. While Men's Health Big Book contains lot and lots of information, it gives you little guidance to make sense of it all. The little snippets of information basically have the same value as reading a couple of magazines. If you thought this book tied all the somewhat useful snippets of information from Men's Health archives together in a more consistent framework, you're out of luck.
- If you struggle with overweight and you are absolutely sure you cannot stray too far from the mainstream American diet or let go of eating lots of animals and fatty foods daily, then the nutritional advice in this book may be the best you can achieve. But if you are serious about your body and health and are willing to change to an optimal, goal-oriented diet (i.e. eat like an athlete), make sure to ignore all nutritional sections in this book completely. They are confusing at best, and if you follow a mainstream European or Asian diet, they will actually lead you in the WRONG direction. Instead, order a copy of the very dry, scarcely illustrated but content wise very solid Power Eating, Third Edition by Susan Kleiner.

About the Author
N. Manikanda Boopathi is presently working as an Assistant Professor (Biotechnology) at the Department of Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, CPMB&B, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India. He graduated in agricultural sciences, did his masters and doctoral studies in Plant Biotechnology and trained at International Rice Research Institute, The Philippines. He has handled more than 20 courses for under-graduate and post-graduate students in his university and is invited frequently for delivering lectures in several institutions, both in India and abroad. His scientific work has been recognized during several occasions and has brought him laurels and awards. He has a vast experience in QTL mapping and marker assisted selection in rice and cotton. He has completed several national and international research projects and is currently working in two countrywide and one worldwide network projects that address the problems of biotic and abiotic stresses in cotton, mungbean, hot-pepper and tomato using system quantitative genetics. Maxted, contributing editor to Cosmopolitan UK, has a quick wit and creates amusing characters in her first novel. Helen, the thirtyish heroine, is a features writer for a trendy women's magazine. She's reeling with grief at the sudden death of her father, and her stress is compounded by the neediness of her mother and grandmother. Helen has plenty more on her plate--she is being evicted from her apartment, she is trying to save a friend who is being abused by her fianc?, and her neurotic cat suffers a series of psychosomatic ailments. Behind the hilarious one-liners, there's a serious theme: it's tough for a young person to "be in charge" when a parent dies. Unfortunately, the appeal of this likable, if nonessential, novel will be limited in the United States by its many British colloquialisms. In addition, the book is far too long and loaded with slapstick scenes; its episodic content would have worked better as linked short stories. For larger collections.

A Sequel Please!

I first picked up Getting Over It, read the back cover, and immediately put it down due to lack of interest. Days later I was still desperate for a new book and, almost reluctantly, decided to give it a try. What a giant surprise! After reading so many generic books about the modern day life of a 20-30 year old woman, Getting Over It was anything but generic. After reading a book with Anna Maxted's witty style it's hard to go back to another author. No one is as creative, hilarious and insightful as Anna Maxted. She captures our insecurities while also showing our strengths. A book not only about romantic relationships but about those with our parents and friends as well. My mom has now read it and is recommending it, as it not only made her laugh, but gave her insight into her own relationship with her mother. Please write a sequel!

Laugh Out Loud but Crying on the Inside

Getting Over It, the story of Helen Bradshaw, late 20's Londoner, whose life slowly begins to crumble after the death of her father, will make you laugh out loud as you share the insights and escapades of Helen and her rowdy friends, while at the same time, it will make you cry as she, little by little, realizes how much her father meant to her. While Helen tries to deal with her grief-sticken mother and stoic grandmother, she negates her own feelings as she insists that she was just not that close to her father. Eventually she realizes that somewhere deep inside is a little girl who misses her father as she remembers her childhood and the daddy she adored. Catharsis is what she needs and finally gets, but it is a long and sad road to find it. Thanks to good friends and a special man, she does find that release. Under the hilarious situations that occur and cause laughter is the very serious subject of dealing with a parent's death and how you actually do get over it. A lovely Chinese custom helps Helen to find release, but there is food for thought here for all who have lost a parent and especially for those who perhaps need to reevaluate that relationship. In all, it is a thoughful and insightful book--also loaded with laughs.

You can definitely relate (and laugh)

Helen Bradshaw is like your best friend who is going through a lot of crap, making some bad decisions, and you can't help her because she won't listen- she just has to "get over it" herself. She's a jerk to her roomate (okay, he deserved it, but still...), it's so obvious to all that love her that she is not coping with her dad's death at all, and she keeps making tremendously stupid mistakes (mostly through poor communication and bad assumptions) with Mr. Potentially Right. However, she does work very hard to get on with her life- I was proud of her. You should know that this book is sad in parts- it is not a laugh a minute, but I liked that- it was more genunine and relatable that way.
Maxted is very funny and with a great knack for universal truths presented with a huge sense of humor- For example, "[In college], the majority of students were present to extend their sex education, so if you wanted action you could usually find it. Jabba the Hutt would have scored. Indeed, I kissed him myself on several occasions." I'm glad I wasn't the only one.
I read this book right after "Welcome to My Planet"- This book is very similar (there are even characters named "Flo" in each- go figure). This book is not as big an exaggerration as Bridget, but if you like Bridget-esque things, you'll definitely like this book.
As a side note- I'd really like a book about a 30 year old woman who is NOT working some menial job and does NOT have an apartment that is a COMPLETE mess. The rest of her life can still be a disaster- that's the part we all relate to.

Great book on writing for all writers, not just judges

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Ross Guberman‘s work. I reviewed his first book, Point Made: How to Write Like the Nation’s Top Advocates I still think it’s probably the best legal writing book out there. If you’re looking to improve your writing, it’s worth owning – regardless whether you’re a lawyer or not.

Now, Guberman has a new book out, Point Taken – How To Write Like The World’s Best Judges. Just as Point Made was an instruction manual on writing briefs for lawyers, Point Taken is an instruction manual on writing opinions for judges. While I’m no judge, and unlikely to ever be one, I still found the book to be informative and helpful, just as with Guberman’s previous work.

Point Taken follows a similar format to Point Made – as opposed to merely telling the reader how to write well – it shows them with numerous examples taken from some of the most well written opinions in history and today. Then, Guberman breaks down the examples and offers tactical advice for applying the techniques to one’s own writing.

The first half of the book is devoted to technicalities of crafting the opening of an opinion, the facts, and the legal analysis. The second half of the book is devoted to “style.” Parallelism, types of transitions, rhetorical devices, analogies, and more are all covered.

Guberman then goes on to break down various techniques used to craft a memorable facts section of an opinion, using examples from the opinions listed. Just as with Point Made, the reader is exposed to many opinions they would have likely never have read. The quality of writing on display is excellent and varied. The lessons given can help any writer – whether judge, lawyers, or layperson.

Improving your writing is of paramount importance. Writing is thinking. The better your writing, the more clear your thoughts. If you want to communicate effectively, you have to work at it. Beyond that, your writing needs to be engaging. Guberman quotes Lord Denning, which I will reproduce here:

"No matter how sound your reasoning, if it is presented in a dull and turgid setting, your hearers – or your readers – will turn aside. They will not stop to listen. They will flick over the pages. But if it is presented in a lively and attractive setting, they will sit up and take notice. They will listen as if spellbound. They will read with engrossment." – Lord Denning, The Family Story 216 (1982)

All writers wish to be so fortunate. And while nothing will get you there except for continuous writing, Guberman’s books can certainly help you along the way.

Ross Guberman has followed his first-rate book about advocacy writing with an equally excellent one -- the best available -- about judicial writing. It should be a mandatory study for all judges and clerks. Although it covers every aspect of the craft of writing clear and persuasive opinions, it does so with a crispness and clarity that make it a pleasure to read. It has the great virtue of providing direct, easy-to-follow advice without trying to pretend that there's only one good way to organize an opinion, or only one style that's appropriate for judicial writing. To drive home that point, it backs up its advice with a treasure-house of examples from well-crafted opinions that both make the advice come to life and demonstrate the range of ways in which it can be effectively applied.

A Great Read!

A great read for a lazy day by the pool. I found myself instantly pulled in, and read the book in a day. The author has managed to deliver great comedic timing while still knowing how to pull the heartstrings. I laughed, I sighed, and I swooned over the very well developed characters. I highly recommend this book to others. I can't wait to read more from this author!

Love it!!! This is one of those books that I read in only a few days. It's hilarious, witty, and very well written. Favreau has done it again with the second book in the "My Best Friend's Brother" series! If you haven't read the first one, get it! Then come back and get this one. You won't be sorry! They are both really good!

This book made my heart flutter!

This book was very well written. The author did very well with capturing how a teenage girl feels and deals with the struggles of her love life. Although her love is not forbidden, per say, the tension with her stunningly amazing boyfriend and truly overprotective father is edge-of-your-seat good! The element of the main character's love-struck, confused best friend adds tension and drama. While reading this book I found myself smiling, laughing and at one point in tears. Crossy Favreau is an amazing author! I will gladly finish her astounding series 'My Best Friends Brother'!

It's lost on most reviewers that this title is in fact an ironic accompaniment to the eponymous NYC stage show by comedic actress Roslyn Hart - i.e. Dr Schiller is a role/persona and this book is a devilishly inventive and witty fiction, people! It's a real buzzkill that it's not truly an instruction manual for how to have sex with anyone (like the Pickup Artist / The Game stuffs) but what makes this tongue-in-cheek blurry verisimilitude (check out the website they built, too, where it seems real people are committedly buying into this program!) not matter is that the writing brilliantly mimics the suggestion-based, self-fulfilling hubris of any generic CBT self-help book (Reader, do these things -- inculcated as chucklesome mnemonics; MBOs (Mind-Blowing Orgasms), BDSM (Be Direct, Seem Mysterious) and you will have TONS of sex with hot people), but also that underneath it, there's actually some good advice here, coherently considered!

Have new experiences, don't dress like a dork, don't be annoying when out with a group of friends, be present and stop fiddling with your iPhone, clean your apartment, go to the gym, don't drink too much and use protection if you're going to get some action, don't take it personally if chemistry is just not there with someone else. This is all pretty good advice voiced by the sexually voracious Dr Alex, premised upon taking care of yourself, building self-confidence, and removing expectations from outcomes outside your control.

But do you want to know something funny? Before I actually found out the book was a fiction, I did one of the challenges in the book, to go eat/drink on your own at a busy bar and do some writing, and within a couple minutes, I got hit on bigtime by the person sitting next to me, without even trying! The ultimate irony would be that this joke love potion actually works! 5 MBO stars.

Such a fun read

I've been looking forward to this book coming out and so glad I finally got a copy. I saw her give some of this very guidance in NYC and really loved her approach and no-nonsense style. If more people would listen to, learn from, and follow her advice this world will be a happier, more satisfied place. I'm paying it forward by passing it on to my sis - You're welcome, World!

With wit and humor, this book is a great read for everyone looking for The One....

Never forget that you are beautiful…

I went a bit out of my comfort zone when I picked up Never Sleep Alone by Dr. Alex Schiller. Not because the content was uncomfortable, but because I am not really sure how in the hell to review a self-help book! I mean it is obvious why you might want to read this book, you might be single, you might be lonely, you might really want to get laid night after night. So if you fall in that category this book will be a great road map for a life that is going to start to be very adventurous in and out of the bedroom. But also, I found reading this book, it is a great tool for someone who has been married over 20 years like myself. Even though I don’t currently sleep alone, my nights have just now gotten to be a bit hotter!

Never forget that your partner is beautiful…..

Never sleep alone is built around 9 principles to moving you in the direction to being The One. Not finding The One, but becoming The One. I loved how this book will drive us to become not only a sexier, more self-assured person, but how it really starts putting the onus on ourselves. Because she is right, until we feel we are The One, no one is ever going to see us as The One. As you follow the 9 principles, you are challenged by the good Dr. to do things that will put you out there. Even though the book is really helping you score in your sexuality, just some of the tasks she gives you will help in many aspects of your life.

And never forget that sex is beautiful.

Several times as I was reading the book I reflected on my marriage and conferred with my husband. It was interesting talking about some of these points as a couple and how really vital they were to making a relationship not only sexier but stronger and healthier. Her points she makes in this book are extremely valid, but the humor and wit that she brings to the table makes reading this book very enjoyable. I mean this chick is hysterical at times! I laughed so hard sometimes because I was thinking yes…that is so true, or OMG I totally do that! Any time you can add a bit of humor in helping you attain a better life, the better.

And never forget that every time you have sex….it could be the last time.

I encourage everyone to grab this book. Dr. Schiller takes an uncomfortable topic for some and breathes some life and humor into. There are so many amazing points that are talked about that anyone from any age or any walk of life will appreciate. I mean honestly…does anyone ever really want to sleep alone???

Tomorrow your genitals could turn to dust.

As aside note, when you take the challenge that you have to sit in a bar without looking at your phone, pull out this book…because I can assure you reading a book with a condom on the cover…in a bar…will attract at least one person!
